This book tells us that the first to represent Sforno in English was Rabbi Raphael Pelcovitz, the renowned Rabbi Emeritus of the Knesseth Israel Congregation in Far Rockaway, New York.
He distinguished himself with his magnificent interpretation of Sforno's Commentary on the Torah.
Now he continues his pioneering work with this new volume.
At the culmination of an eminent career as a scholar, teacher, and leader, Rabbi Pelcovitz performs lasting service, both for the Sforno and for English-speaking Jews around the world. Sforno Ovadiah Sforno was one of the glories of the Italian Jews, a community that, for many centuries, produced Torah lights far out of proportion to their size.
Born in the last quarter of the 15th century, he experienced the agony and trauma of the Spanish Inquisition, the new persecutions in Italy, and papal enmity.
Despite these difficulties, Sforno constantly grew in Torah, personal stature, and in his gifts to posterity. Although he was one of the great halachic authorities of Italy, his fame is mainly based on his comments on many books of Scripture.
