Texas today. While waiting for the day of his prison execution, David Gale, once a respected professor of philosophy and an activist in a movement against the death penalty, gets permission to interview journalist Bitsey.
Gale tells her that she has not raped or murdered her friend Costance, who is in fact the victim of a conspiracy to report that she now intends to tell how the events actually happened.
So it goes back to some time, when a student's false accusation of sexual violence had caused him to lose both his university place and his wife who had moved to Spain with their young son. Desperate and without prospects, Gale had turned to alcohol and had therefore found refuge with his friend Constance, known within the association against the death penalty. Hearing these events for a few days, Bitsey develops the belief that Gale is innocent and that an injustice will be committed.
This thesis seems to be corroborated shortly after the discovery of a video: we see Constance who is about to commit suicide because she is affected by a terminal illness and who, however, wants to pass her death by murder to demonstrate the fallibility of justice and Justice.
Convictions Bitsey tries to avoid this test in time but fails. Gale is executed. Immediately afterwards, Bitsey receives another cassette that begins where the other ended: this time, Gale appears near Constance's lifeless body and does not betray emotions and looks into the room, also complicit in that 'machination'.
